No, not that Dark Knight. The other one. We all go through periods of self-doubt. It is an inescapable consequence of being human and spending time in the real world. It comes in many forms from competitive sports to taking an exam. It crops up in the little day to day events such as wondering if you prepared enough material for today’s work meeting or are you good enough to actually pull off that quiche you planned for dinner. This is all well and good and you should take the time to note these moments in your life. However, what I would like to address is that more initiatory moment of self-doubt on steroids known as the Dark Night of the Soul or Crossing the Abyss. What does this mean, why do it, how do you get there, and who am I to even speak of such a thing.

No one ever asks to be transgendered. I mean, seriously. “Gee, I would LOVE it if I could have the mind of a woman but totally be in a male body. That would just be so cool!” Wow. Um, no. You see, you are never really able to focus on anything except the perpetual noise in your head. On a repeat loop is the phrase (I suppose other TG might have a different one, but you get the idea), “I am wired wrong. I am built wrong. I’m broken.” Hey, does that sound like a life you want? The world HATES you because you are anathema. You are not natural (which is wrong). I am using a broad brush here. I realize that and to those parts of the world that accept or honor TG, I heartily applaud you for seeing through the rubbish.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out a beautifully written article on vastness by my friend Steve Davies. It can be found here: http://theblogofbaphomet.com/2014/05/16/space-the-final-frontier/ . I particularly enjoyed the aspect of terror that working with vastness can bring on in addition to the HPL shadow archetypes of the Elder Gods. It is really worth the read!
The darkness is woven out of mystery. Inherently, and I say this in experiential terms and apologize for the broad brush or if I offend any Vulcan-esque individuals, people are emotionally driven. Our natural first reaction, unless otherwise trained is rooted in an emotional response. This is a well-known fact and the reason why we are so susceptible to marketing. You do not see advertisements that appeal to your intellectual side, now do you? Every television show, every movie, most writing all have that checkbox ticked off. We obviously gravitate to certain emotional responses more easily than others: love, warmth, peace, and joy are easy to give in to. Uncertainly, fear, mystery, the unknown, and smallness, on the other hand, make us uncomfortable.
Space. The final frontier. These are the continuing… Just kidding. Well, it is possible to be a geek and still be sexy, no? The internet, with all its vast resources and loads of pictures seem to suggest that. Anyway, Star Trek is really not where I am going with this little piece of writing. However, that television program did touch upon a point that I think is worth exploring. That point would be the notion of vastness. |
Lasciel AnnwynnI am one of those. Yes, that kind. I poke around in the corners and lesser explored paths of life looking for it's mysteries. There is so much magic in the world when you open your perception to it. Look with eyes of wonder. Archives
